Knobs Podcast S01 E06: Thick, Gooey and Controlled: Building Better Low End

Big, controlled low end is the thing that separates a record that feels finished from one that feels flimsy. In Episode 6 of the Knobs Podcast, Simon Moro and Terry Hart pull apart how to build a bottom end that is thick, gooey and controlled, and why it is almost never fixed with a single EQ move at the end.

The through-line is right there in the word they keep coming back to: foundation. Like a house, the low end has to be there all the time, stable and constant, before anything you build on top of it can sound right. Get it wrong and everything above starts to sound bright, pokey and brittle.

It Starts With the Player and the Room

The biggest low-end decisions happen long before the mix. Simon tells the story of tracking bass in his teens, then having a real bass player step up to the same instrument and the same channel strip. The note that came back was rounder, more sustained, more contained. Same gear, different fingers. Not all musicians are created equal, and if the player does not have it, everything downstream is compensation.

The room matters just as much. A standing wave can cancel a frequency stone dead, so a classic trick is to carry a floor tom, kick or acoustic guitar around the room until it sings, then record it there. Find the biggest, most even bottom end the space will give you.

Why Cheap Gear Costs You Low End

Both are candid about where entry-level gear falls down, and it is at the extremes. On cheaper preamps and converters, the low end is technically there on a spectrum analyser, but it is not a foundation. It wobbles around the room, uncontained, and when you try to EQ it, nothing quite happens. A lot of that comes down to the power supply and slew rate: recreating a 30 or 40Hz transient takes real current delivered fast.

Converters get the same treatment, described as a dirty windshield. One channel might not reveal it, but ninety channels through a better converter is night and day. Their point is not that you must spend a fortune. It is that you should stop blaming yourself for a sound the tool cannot give you.

Auditory Masking Is the Real Enemy

Most ill-defined low end comes down to auditory masking: when two sources share the same frequency, the ear largely ignores the quieter one, and what you are left with is a blur somewhere between the two rather than a punchy kick and a punchy bass. So the extreme bottom should come from one source. If three basses arrive, find the one with a solid sub and high-pass the rest, or use a tool like TrackSpacer to carve the sub out of the others.

Piano is a repeat offender. Simon often high-passes it around 200Hz to give the bass room, splitting the part so the intro keeps its full weight but the low end drops out the moment the bass arrives. You never hear the piano get thinner, because the bass is now carrying that energy anyway.

Adding More Won’t Make It Bigger

A recurring trap is thinking that another layer will fix a thin sound. Simon mixed a rock record buried in guitar layers that still sounded empty, because the real problem was arrangement, not track count. One guitar can be enormous, as any AC/DC song proves. Before you stack another bass or guitar, ask why: is the part wrong, the register wrong, the key wrong? Adding more without a plan just eats headroom and definition.

Split the Bass, and Keep It Constant

The mixing move both swear by, learned from Michael Brauer, is splitting the bass into separate low and high channels. It instantly makes the bottom easier to control and, crucially, consistent. A slow leveller like an LA-2A on the low band keeps it there whether the player is down on the low string or up the neck. With both on faders you can nudge the sub up a few dB when the chorus guitars pile in. Simon even routes the low band straight to the mix bus, so it stays rock solid while the snare is compressing everything else.

Distortion for Speakers You Don’t Have

One of the best-kept low-end secrets is distortion. Adding harmonics to the bass, whether with saturation, a Culture Vulture, or plugins like Max Bass, RBass and Submarine, means the fundamental reads on small speakers that cannot reproduce it, because the ear infers the missing low note from the harmonic series above it. Keep it well down, just for presence, favour even-order harmonics on a pitched instrument, and remember that in context, other distorted elements will mask it and the bass will sound silky and round again.

You Can’t Fix What You Can’t Hear

None of this works blind. A room can add or subtract 30dB, so a decision made in a bad room can be 30dB in the wrong direction. Their monitoring ladder, cheapest first: a free spectrum analyser (aim for a smooth diagonal from loud lows to quieter highs), calibrated headphones with a trusted reference track, then treated monitors with speaker calibration done last, after the room itself is handled. And a warning on subs, which they both avoid: a dedicated sub tends to feel disconnected and off to one side. The real test is simpler.

Final Thoughts

Great low end is not one plugin, it is a chain of intentional choices: the right player and room, gear you can trust, one clear source for the sub, arrangement that leaves space, and a bottom end that stays constant enough to become its own rhythmic creature. There is even a reason it feels so good. Low end makes the body feel heavy, and its absence makes us feel light, which is exactly how a groove lifts and drops. Build the foundation first, and everything you put on top of it finally has somewhere to stand.
