This one started at the movies. Simon went to see Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey in IMAX, projected on actual film, and came out thinking less about the plot than about the medium itself. Real light had passed through real celluloid and landed on the screen, and it felt like magic, like there was nothing between him and the image. That feeling sent him down a rabbit hole that lands squarely on the thing every producer wrestles with: why do film and tape have a magic that digital, for all its power, still struggles to match?
The answer they arrive at is counterintuitive. It is not that analog captures more. It is that analog is smarter about where it keeps detail and where it lets it go. Digital’s “flaw” was never having too little. It was having too much, everywhere, all at once.
Detail Where You Want It
Simon describes how film physically works. Light hits the celluloid and crystallises silver where it lands, a permanent chemical change. Zoom right in and the edge of a face is packed with crystals, while the sky beside it has almost none. So when you watch, you get dense detail exactly where you are meant to look and almost none where you are not. Digital does the opposite. There are the same 300 dots per inch in a flat patch of sky as there are in the centre of a man’s eye who has just been through hell. Every part of the frame is described with the same relentless precision, whether the image needs it or not.
Tape Is Doing Your Mix for You
The same logic maps straight onto audio. Tape is biased so that the signal sits neutral, and then the medium responds to level. Push it harder and it saturates and darkens and softens. Let it drop and it brightens so it stays easy to hear.

Digital does not do that. It is perfectly crisp at every level, and at very low levels it actually loses detail in a way that sounds bad rather than forgiving. What we loved about tape was precisely the thing the spec sheet called a shortcoming.
Is the Universe Analog or Digital
Because these are unscripted conversations, the discussion takes a hard turn into physics, and it earns its place. At the macro scale the world is continuous: things move smoothly through space. Go down to the quantum level and it is all discrete steps, electrons jumping between orbits without ever occupying the space in between. In that sense the universe is “digital” at its foundation and continuous on top. Analog audio and film sit on the continuous side, an unbroken waveform, an unbroken gradient of colour, which may be part of why they feel so natural to us.
The Brain Has a Frame Rate
Film pulls off a beautiful trick: the image is a continuous analog capture, but the motion is discrete, twenty-four or thirty frames a second. It works because our own perception is quantised too. Terry recalls the experiment with two flashing circles that merge into a single steady one once the flash rate passes about thirty per second. Film runs at the edge of what the brain will fuse into motion, using our wetware to sell an illusion that is not really happening. It is, as they put it, smoke and mirrors, and knowing that does not make it less effective.
Mood Lighting vs the 7-Eleven
The cleanest way they frame the whole thing is lighting. Digital is fluorescent light: clinical, even, unforgiving. Exactly what you want if someone is performing surgery on you, and exactly what you do not want over dinner. Analog is mood lighting. And the tell is what we have spent twenty years doing to digital: piling on tape emulations, saturation plugins and an obsession with compressors, all to claw back the natural darkening and lightening that tape gave us for free. The 1950s and 60s had compressors too, but nobody was obsessed with them, because the medium was already doing it.
The Fight for Detail
Once you notice it, you see it everywhere. The too-detailed TV in the shop window where you can count the bumps on an actor’s face. The U2 concert in 3D where a water bottle on a Vox amp suddenly looks like real life and breaks the spell. Film, by contrast, is flat and two-dimensional and somehow all the more magic for it. Watch Lawrence of Arabia and there is no digital version that gives you that feeling; render that desert in perfect 3D and it is just desert. What we are paying for, they argue, is not an accurate recreation. It is a softened, glorified, out-of-this-world interpretation of a moment.
Could There Be a Better Digital
The genuinely interesting question they leave open is whether digital simply started on the wrong foot. Simon does the maths live: 48,000 samples per second divided by 440Hz is 109.09, so you cannot even fit a whole number of samples into the fundamental of the note. We can push to 192kHz and beyond, but that is more of the same idea, chasing accuracy. He wonders aloud about a format with “floating fidelity”, something that, like 32-bit float does for dynamic range, could focus detail where it matters and let it slip away at the extremes, the way film and tape always did. DSD tried to sound like analog but chased accuracy rather than that forgiving softness. Nobody has a solution. They just both feel there is something there.
Final Thoughts
Digital is miraculous, and neither host is asking to give it back. A whole studio’s worth of audio in your back pocket, plugins on subscription, edits that would have been impossible on tape. But the honest reflection here is that a lot of what we now do to digital is an attempt to reverse-engineer the very things the format was designed to eliminate. The first people to build it may have missed the point, that we want to put things in and out of focus, the way you would frame a shot. There is no fix offered, just a good, curious conversation and a strong suspicion that the next real step forward is not more detail, but detail where you want it.
