Reverb is one of the first tools everyone reaches for and one of the last they actually master. It either disappears entirely, or you push it until the whole mix is swimming, and it never quite sounds like the deep, three-dimensional space you hear on real records. In Episode 12 of the Knobs Podcast, Simon Moro and Terry Hart take reverb apart and explain why.
The short answer is that reverb is not an effect you add, it is a space you design, and depth comes from a handful of ideas that have nothing to do with turning a wet knob up.
Why Amateur Reverb Sounds Amateur
The classic mistake is one reverb across the whole song. The ear gets bored astonishingly fast, so a single plate that sounded great for a bar becomes something you keep turning up trying to hear, until the mix is a mess. A great reverb is only great for a moment. The fix is to keep it moving: automate it on and off between sections, swap textures, and let delays carry the parts where a static reverb would stall.
Start With a Short Ambient Reverb
Both engineers, independently, start a lead vocal the same way: a very short, ambient reverb whose only job is to add stereo width and weight. A bone-dry vocal sounds like a tiny thing next to screaming guitars and drums. A touch of ambience places it in a space and makes it feel like it is coming from both speakers, while the vocal itself stays in the phantom centre. Think of it as turning up the early reflections of a bigger reverb.
Build a Palette, Then Automate
From there it is a palette, not a preset: a long hall for warm decay and reflections, a dark mono plate for mood, a shimmer or feature verb for transitions and big moments, plus slap and spot echoes for urgency and rhythm. You could mix with just a short and a long reverb, and let the character come from the rest. A slap echo split slightly left and right, say 65 milliseconds one side and 75 the other, adds urgency to a single word without you ever touching a fader, and a longer spot echo throws a whole line into the distance. What matters is that these are all set up and ready, so you can react in the moment rather than stopping to build them.
Pre-Delay Is the Secret to Depth
This is the idea that separates deep mixes from amateur ones. Pre-delay, the gap before the reverb arrives, tells the brain how far away a source is. Imagine someone talking right in front of you: you hear their voice, then the room bounces back later. Move them to the back of the hall and their voice arrives at the same time as the room. So the loud ambient vocal reverb gets the longest pre-delay, often around 100 milliseconds, which pushes the vocal to the front and keeps the consonants out of the wash, dramatically improving intelligibility. An old trick makes this obvious: send every instrument to one room reverb, each via a different pre-delay, drums short, vocal longest, and the whole mix suddenly has front-to-back depth.
Darkness Equals Distance

Tone does the same job. High frequencies lose energy over distance, so darker sounds read as further away. Put a delay into an analog mode where each repeat gets darker and it feels like the sound is travelling into the distance. This is why reaching for a low-pass filter because something sounds “edgy” often works, you are not really fixing the tone, you are placing it further back in the artificial room you are building.
Reverb Is World-Building
Reverb is really sonic world-building, and the world is connected to the emotion. Design an empty hall and you keep the highs, reduce diffusion and lengthen the decay. Put an audience in that same room and it gets darker, more diffused and shorter. Wood sounds warm, concrete and steel sound cold.

You are trying to convince the listener they are in the room with the musicians, which is where the emotional attachment comes from. A spring reverb on a guitar is the opposite move, part of that instrument’s own sound rather than the shared space, and you can blend the two as much as you like.
Reverb as Sound Design
Reverbs do not have to live on a return. When a sound needs reinventing, insert one and commit: a spring on a guitar because that is the sound you wish you had recorded, or a big hall printed 100% wet to drop something into another galaxy entirely. Two tricks that always land: a dark reverb on the kick, with its high-pass filter switched off, to add subby wooliness, and a supporting snare reverb on every second hit for the first half of a verse then every hit for the second half, which fakes a jump from half-time to full-time and gives the section real momentum.
Ducking, De-Essing and a Vocoder
When you want a huge, lush reverb but the vocal still up front, duck the reverb with the vocal using TrackSpacer or a dynamic EQ focused on the consonants. It clears intelligibility and makes the reverb feel like it is hugging the vocal rather than smearing it. On sibilance, modern habit is to de-ess before the reverb, but the guys note those bright S-y Lexicon tails on 80s and 90s records were part of the sound, and worth leaning back into. And for a bit of fun, try running a reverb into a vocoder.
Final Thoughts
Reverb stops sounding amateur the moment you stop thinking of it as a wet knob and start thinking of it as space, distance and story. Build a palette, keep it moving, use pre-delay and darkness to place things front to back, and design the room to match the emotion of the song. Do that, and your reverbs will finally sound like the records you have been chasing.
