Everyone hits the same wall eventually. The vocal won’t sit on top of the mix, so you reach for an EQ, then a compressor, then another EQ, and it still feels buried. In Episode 5 of the Knobs Podcast, Simon Moro and Terry Hart make the case that the equaliser was almost never the problem.
The real answer is less convenient and far more useful: a vocal that cuts through is mostly won before you open a plugin, and then finished with contextual, creative mixing rather than a fixed set of “vocal settings”. There is no single correct chain. Context is everything.
It Starts Before You Open a Plugin
The biggest lever on a vocal is the voice itself. If a singer lacks resonance and breath control, the vocal will sound thin and refuse to sit, and every EQ move, compressor and fader ride after that is just compensation. Simon talks about getting singers to a vocal coach in the months before tracking, and simple diaphragm work: lying on the floor with books on your stomach, breathing so the books rise and fall, to actually engage the breath.
The proof is a story from a Ten Tenors session. One singer stepped up and sounded like he was blowing the mic apart, so they checked the meters. He was at half the level of everyone else, and sounded twice as loud. That is resonance, and it is the whole game.

Give the Voice Grit From the Start
A vocal has to compete with drums that have been crunched and saturated, and with heavy guitars or screaming synths. Meeting that with a clean, polite voice is not a fair fight. So the goal from the tracking stage is a little grain, grit and weight: vintage large-diaphragm condensers that add harmonic content, the right preamp, and a singer who knows where the voice blooms on the mic and stays a couple of inches off it. Clean is not your friend here.
Comp for Matched Energy
Cut-through is baked in at the comp long before the mix. Terry uses regression to the mean as a signal that a take is done: once you have three or four above-average takes, you are as good as you are going to get. Comp mainly from those, keep the energy matched across the phrase, and steal the odd magic moment, a fatigued word, an expressive out-breath, from the takes around them.
Spend Your Time Where It Counts
Simon shares a line from a colleague, Christian Skellen, that reframed how he mixes vocals.
“The vocal is the most important thing in the song, so why are you spending 80% of the time on the kick drum and 5% on the vocal?”
The fix is to build the vocal out. Instead of one long reverb, use two: a short ambient reverb up louder to create 3D space around the voice, and a long reverb lower in the mix for grandeur without the whole thing washing out. Add a slap echo for excitement, a parallel limiter for body, and the Brauer-style blend of several compressors on their own faders, which gives instant access to tone, brightness, darkness and character in a way one plugin never can.
The Ear Craves Distraction
The idea that ties the mixing half together came from David Kahn: the ear craves distraction. Give the listener something new every bar, even something tiny, and they stay locked into the song. As soon as a mix becomes hyper-predictable, the brain decides it is safe and tunes out.
The practical version is having five or so delays and a rack of reverbs already set up and ready to go, so you can react in the moment and stay in flow. The second you stop to insert a plugin, you lose the flow state and the ability to compare one option against another.
When It Won’t Cut Through, Identify the Issue First
There is no universal fix, so both start by naming the actual problem before reaching for a tool. If the whole mix is distorted, the vocal probably needs its own grit to belong. If there is too much bottom end, the vocal has no room for weight. If the centre of the mix is congested, the answer might be panning, a dynamic EQ side-chained from the vocal, or a tool like TrackSpacer that carves the vocal’s frequencies out of everything else. A great trick: solo the vocal in the chorus and add instruments one at a time until it breaks. The one that breaks it is your problem.
The Pre-Fader Trick That Levels Itself
One of the most useful moves is a parallel distortion or saturation sent pre-fader. Because it is pre-fader, it self-levels: when you push the vocal down, the distortion adds clarity back; when you push it up, it stays smooth instead of getting abrasive. Every fader move changes the tonality, all from one button. The flip side is the trap: post-fader sends keep the vocal sound you carefully dialled in, while pre-fader sends change it the moment you touch the fader. Pre-fader is for monitoring, post-fader is for effects.
The Counter: When the Vocal Is Too Big
Sometimes the problem is the opposite. A soft song, or a bedroom vocal dropped onto an all-digital backing track, and the voice simply will not glue in. The answer is shared space: put everything into the same reverb so the elements live in one room, and lean on bus compression so the whole mix moves together and feels connected.
Final Thoughts
Getting a vocal to cut through is not a preset. It is a chain of decisions that starts with the singer and ends with contextual, in-the-moment mixing. Fix the source first, spend your time where it matters, keep the ear engaged, and identify the real problem before you reach for a plugin. Do that, and you will find the EQ was rarely the thing standing in your way.
